Blunt Announces Fire Departments Receive Homeland Security Grants

JEFFERSON CITY, September 30, 2005-Gov. Matt Blunt announced today that Missouri was awarded over $2.9 Million to 31 Missouri fire departments. The grants represent the 3rd through 7th round of Assistance to Firefighters Grant Awards, awarded on a weekly basis.

Director Mark James of the Department of Public Safety said the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program assists local fire departments in purchasing firefighting equipment, funding firefighter health and safety programs, enhancing emergency medical services programs, and conducting fire education and prevention programs.

“Firefighter Grant Awards from the Department of Homeland Security allow our local fire and emergency response teams to be outfitted with the equipment and vehicles they need to adequately protect and serve Missourians,” James said.

Missouri Fire Departments receiving grants for to purchase equipment through the Operations and Safety program are: Nixa Fire Department (FD) ($82,892), Webb City FD ($52,067), Wheaton FD ($109,250), Jefferson R-7 FPD ($92,953), Helena Lion FD ($35,297), Washburn FD ($60,195), Berkeley FD ($66,838), University City FD ($78,914), Odessa EMS ($48,450), Excelsior Springs FD ($114,000), Scott City FD ($70,267), Curryville VFD ($49,029); Des Peres DPS ($45,401), Cedar Hill FPD ($42,157), Lake Ozark FPD ($227,858), Eureka FPD ($241,790), Shrewsbury FD ($57,000); Bourbon FPD ($56,845), Maplewood FD ($47,500), DeKalb FPD ($55,575), Hamilton FPD ($82,112), Black Jack FPD ($116,334), Columbia FD ($141,286), Goose Creek Lake FD ($34,769), Leopold Volunteer VFD ($48,118), Holts Summit FPD ($42,085), and Higginsville Ambulance ($28,500).

Missouri Fire Departments receiving grants to purchase vehicles are: Purdy FD ($180,500), West Plains Fire and Rescue ($261,250), Howell County Rural Fire District ($269,800), Timber Knob VFD ($66,738).

To date, 102 Missouri Fire Departments have received $10,533,565 for the 2005 Assistance to Firefighter Grants program, which began August 19, 2005.
