Statement from Mark James on
Increased Aviation Security
“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has
taken immediate steps to increase aviation security measures due to
the attempted plot to destroy aircraft flying from the United Kingdom
into the United States. For that reason, the nation’s threat
level has been raised to orange for all commercial flights in the
United States. Any commercial flights from the United Kingdom have
been elevated to red.
“Missouri, like the rest of the country is responding
with absolute precaution. Both Missouri International Airports have
threat level response plans, which are immediately implemented when
there is a change in the nation’s threat level. The Missouri
State Highway Patrol has been requested to assist with additional
security in terminals at Kansas City International Airport.
“We are in close communications with DHS officials
in D.C. as well as law enforcement and security agencies in Kansas
City and St. Louis. We will maintain contact to ensure we have the
highest level of preparedness should the alert level change.
“Airline officials are prohibiting any liquids
including beverages, hair gels and lotions from being carried on the
plane. Travelers should be patient during screenings and always remain
vigilant in their surroundings.”
Director James will be available at 11 a.m. in his Jefferson
City office located at the Truman Office Building 8th floor for a
short news conference. Missouri Homeland Security Coordinator Paul
Fennewald will be at MSHP Troop C in St. Louis for a news conference
at 11 a.m.
