Comments: Officer Kowalski,51, died of cancer linked to a gunshot wound in 1987 that tore through his midsection. He was shot while chasing two men, one of which shot him with a pistol, hitting him in the abdomen. He suffered serious injuries to his pancreas, liver and stomach and was diagnosed with cancer in those areas in the spring of 2008. He did returned to duty, working in the narcotics unit and homicide before retiring in 2000 with 20 years in the department.
