Missouri Department of Public Safety awards more than $850,000 in grants to improve officer and public safety

Grants to 122 local police agencies will buy bulletproof vests, vehicles, in-car cameras, police radios and other equipment

The Missouri Department of Public Safety today announced that law enforcement agencies across Missouri will share more than $850,000 in grants to obtain essential law enforcement equipment to increase officer and public safety. Items that will be purchased with the funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, include vehicles, ballistic vests, squad car light bars, sirens, in-car cameras and police radios.  
"The safety of the state's law enforcement officers must be one of Missouri's highest priorities," said Gov. Jay Nixon. "This funding will assist in the purchase of 17 police vehicles, 84 ballistic vests, 114 police radios and other important equipment to help ensure that the men and women who patrol our streets and help keep their fellow Missourians safe have the tools they need to fulfill their mission."
In total, $857,266 in federal Local Law Enforcement Block Grants (LLEBG/JAG) is being awarded to 122 law enforcement agencies, including city police, county sheriffs, public university police departments and state law enforcement agencies. Grant awards are limited to $10,000 with a 10 percent local match requirement. The funding will help pay for a total of:
§ 17 vehicles § 173 light bars/lights § 33 siren boxes § 88 flashlights § 84 ballistic vests § 118 reflective vests/protective clothing (cut-resistant gloves, raincoats, parkas) § 60 in-car cameras § 114 radios § 46 car cages/partitions § 42 trauma kits § 827 miscellaneous items (mobile data terminals, handcuffs, shackles, traffic cones, etc.)
