The Missouri Department of Public Safety is the designated state agency required to monitor compliance with the federal Juvenile Justice Reauthorization Act. Compliance with the four “Core” requirements is determined using data which must be collected, analyzed, and verified before being submitted annually to OJJDP. Surveys are the primary tool for collecting the required data. The type and frequency of survey are determined by classification. Once received, the surveys, and log sheets as applicable, are thoroughly reviewed. If data is missing or there are potential concerns the agency is contacted directly. This is done to ensure the data is correct, to verify any instances of non-compliance and, if necessary, develop strategies to prevent future instances of non-compliance. Additionally, states are required to verify data through on-site visits. The frequency of these visits is generally determined by classification, however, agencies who experienced instances of non-compliance in the prior year will generally receive follow-up visits to ensure the successful return to compliance. The following chart illustrates the State’s compliance monitoring schedule.
